about

I'd recorded the rest of Ypres Incarnate and was planning to release it as a four-track before I decided to go back and record "Divine Misanthropy". I initially left it out of the concept due to the contrast in genre from the rest of the songs on the release, and from my previous Larks releases in general.

This EP delves frequently into a young soldier's belief in God and the mental conflict this creates when faced with the horrors witnessed on the battlefield. This song brings that struggle to its boiling point and attempts to portray the betrayal felt by those who realised they'd been sent to die in the name of their god.

lyrics

There is no sky here
Death’s veil forever surrounds me
God has forgotten us
We were condemned to begin with
I hide below the earth
Gun in hand my only companion
I feel the rot in my toes
Death’s hold patiently awaits me

I have seen hell
God forsakes us

The stench of corpses perpetual
I’ve seen what no man should see
I watch them rot where they fall
Inconceivable brutality
Men with lives left behind them
Torn to pieces in machine-gunfire
Left limbless and screaming
Corpses hanging from razor wire

I’ll live and die in this cesspit
In the company of corpses of friends
Many a companion I’ve made here
And many of them stare at me dead
I’m thankful for these carrion crows
To tear out the flesh from their eyes
For when the dead gaze upon me
I know that I am next to die

Where is my god; my salvation?
You traitor; forsaker

All my life I lived by my god
Bullets tear by and I beg for the end
The horror I’ve seen I could never forget
I realise now there is nothing beyond
For how could a god allow such hell on Earth?
