about

"Ad Majorem" was written around the same time as the Langemark EP. It's seen release twice in the past, but only ever as an instrumental demo. There are musical aspects of this song which I don't personally think sit right with the mood of this release, but I wanted to stay true to the original composition.

Lyrically, this track is written from the perspective of those calling the orders in the Great War, a million miles from the battlefields. The title translates roughly to "the greater glory of God", and is displayed on a plaque at the Menin Gate in the town of Ypres. The translation reminded me of the intense propaganda used to influence the minds of young men during the war, who were told to fight for their god and their country.

lyrics

For the glory of god
For the glory of this country
You are duty-bound to swear fealty
This is a call to arms
All will take witness
Welcome the privilege to die for England

A call to arms
In the name of the father
Gather all your sons
To be fed to the slaughter

The greater glory of God
The swansong of a generation
Carry us to the ground

Your empire calls to you
Die nameless in the dirt
As thousands before you
Litter the earth with their fallen
How can mankind rebuild
After such hideous inhumanity?
The young are gutted and butchered
Those in power lose nothing

High atop my status
I have seen no war
Yet I continue to call the orders
Pawns moving on a chessboard
In the face of unimaginable losses
For England, my troops will forge on
I need no strategy for I meet no consequence
Slaughter of innocents is none my concern

Die by my command
With a rifle in hand

This is a call to arms
In the name of the father
Gather all your sons
To be fed to the slaughter
Ad majorem dei gloriam
